  The Role

Your role

We are looking for an ambitious and experienced data engineer to take ownership of the infrastructure and processing of complex maritime data sets that make The Cruise Globe possible. This role will involve helping the development team refine and optimise the company's data architecture and hands-on development of processing algorithms and data management systems.

We need a proactive self-starter who can demonstrate experience with building and running complex data systems, whilst always demonstrating the commercial mindset required to deliver optimum value for the business. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a small, high-paced business. This is a high autonomy role, with genuine potential for rapid progression in the business for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of the company’s data infrastructure - Ensuring the steady running of our existing databases and storage, and their integrations into our products, in house software, and third party integrations (Shopify, Notion, Airtable, etc).
  • Helping the development team incorporate our new live ship position data into our existing systems - A major project is to integrate live ship positions into The Cruise Globe. You will help build this new feature, whilst also integrating this new data feed into our existing pipelines.
  • Development of data processing algorithms - We are continuously improving the algorithms that analyse, clean and refine the complex (and somewhat flawed) AIS data that powers our business. A deep understanding of solving intricate data challenges is essential for this role.
  • Building and maintaining business management dashboards - As we grow, and have more team members accessing our data, we need robust solutions to ensure productivity and accuracy.
  • Integrating new value-add data into our existing products - There is a huge opportunity to improve the user value of our products by integrating new and interesting data sets including weather, port information, and cruise deals.

Requirements

  • You must:Have a minimum of 3 years experience as a software engineer
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of running a complex data architecture
  • Have at least 2 years experience of data engineering technologies and modern development best practice, including, PostgresSQL, Python, and AWS components including S3 and Redshift
  • Experience designing and implementing data lakes & cloud data warehouses
  • Experience with third party API integration and ETL implementation
  • Have experience developing and deploying low-code solutions to monitor and maintain processes and databases (e.g. Google suite, Jupyter, Retool, Airtable, etc.)
  • Be proficient in using the latest AI tools to significantly accelerate development speed
  • Demonstrate experience of building and deploying solutions at pace. This is a results and output based role.
  • Have project management skills and experience coordinating technical builds and launches
  • Be a proactive problem-solver, showing attention to detail
  • Have strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a small fast-moving team.
  • Be eligible to work in the UK (we are not able to sponsor a visa).

It’s a bonus (but not essential!) if you have

  • Any experience of maritime AIS data, and GIS systems
  • Previous experience in a high-growth startup environment
  • An interest in travel, ships and/or the cruise industry

The company started as www.thecruisemaps.com, making beautiful keepsake maps showing the exact route of people’s cruise holidays. Building on the success of this product (580% revenue growth YoY, and partnerships with some of the biggest brands in the industry like Cunard, Fred Olsen and P&O), we developed www.thecruiseglobe.com, the first of its kind service for cruise lovers to track, visualise and share their cruising experience on an interactive globe. The uptake has been phenomenal, with over 12,000 users and over 75,000 cruises logged within the first month. There are 36 million cruise passengers per year; our ambition is for the cruise globe to become the must-have accessory for anyone who goes on cruises.
